Crime drama's usually involve three types of characters; the characters who solve crimes, the characters who commit the crimes and the victims. The typical plot of these dramas centre around solving a crime which is not usually solved until the end of the episode or series. Examples of a TV crime drama include; Midsomer Murders, CSI: Miami, and Poirot.

A 'soap' is a serial drama on television or radio which features related storylines about the lives of many characters. The stories typically focus on emotional relationships to the point of melodrama. Examples of soaps would include; Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks
